Wow! Is Jas Back? Big news and a quote from the man himself.
After years of waiting we had actually considered giving up on Jas Mann, this is the royal we that is, I can't speak for the folks who run other websites. Then rumours started appearing that Jas might be releasing some new material. He actually wrote to the forum and here is what he said: Hi folks (are you lot still here?) Really, thanks unbelievably for your support. BZ was never really meant to be a 'cult', we just wanted to be out there and heard by the people we really care about - the fans. The demise of the group started way back in 1995 when our debut single was released after lengthy promotion in the media (thanks L), which lead the music community (of particular concern those who do not like rock & roll as much as dance or techno) to believe that our music was for them. It seems that a lot of people were disappointed with the Spaceman single (most people rushed to buy it before hearing it in full), so while the song itself did exceptionally well in the charts we found that over time people had 'heard enough' and began moving away. Each single since then has sold fewer and fewer copies, and there has also been low demand for our albums. It's a real shame that while some people really liked our music, most people would never even give it a chance - and our lack of coverage in the media (and especially MTV) meant that BZ got sucked into the blackhole of obscurity. We even tried to reinvent ourselves with our second album - King Kong Groover. Again the same thing happened, when we released the it's first single (All The Money's Gone) folks STILL expected it to be Spaceman! Before the band split we were discussing the the situation, and the idea emerged that if our debut single had been 'The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes' (as was originally intended), people would have taken us more seriously and got to know us for what we are. Spaceman always was a fluke... you know that already of course - it could still have been as much of a hit even if released later except the die-hard fans would recognise what's going on and stick with us for the next single. So it all fell to pieces basically. When the name 'Babylon Zoo' means 'Spaceman' more than it means 'Babylon Zoo' (zinc plated rock and roll) then you'd think it's time to give up - really. When I anounced that I had been signed up by Remote Music I had originally intended to 'do a David Bowie' and release my new music online early. Surfers could pay to download the tracks, and in time the songs would be re-released on CD format (like they always were with BZ) under the name Jas Mann. That was the idea, however Over the course of the last 12 months we have had numerous incidents of folks busting into the RM servers and stealing the music. There have also been numerous reported incidents of folks distributing (or 'sharing') the music through computer programs such as Napster and Kazaa. Why pay to download a file from one website when you can get it free from another? That was the problem we faced, since we were making no money we decided to pull the plug on the RM project - hence the Remote Music server no longer operates. Aside from all that, I'm in Dublin at the moment but next week I fly to Sydney to film the video of the first single from my debut (as a solo artist) album. You'll be dead surprised when you see me though - well not really that much. I've 'changed' just a bit since those heady Spaceman days, and all I can say is look out for my hair! In Sight of the Cosmic Citadel - Coming Soon. Also, keep a close eye on my new website, www.xray-mann.co.uk cause it'll be opening late this November (well, maybe we'll throw in a teaser preview on October 1st - that gave it away...), you'll find out loads of juicy bits about me that you all seem to want to know that didn't fit the electric persona of my BZ alter ego... Peace, And thanks again for your continued support. Hope springs eternal, I'll always be around. Wow, we all thought! How cool. So we waited about a bit more and got on with our lives. Did a bit of growing up etc. and then we got more news, good news.It seems that Jas Mann has formed another new band, Mariachi Static. He has been working with some other bands who live on a website at www.hubrecords.com. So check it out! Maybe we'll be dancing to some new tracks in the near future. In the mean time, i can recommend trying to get hold of some Sandkings records. Jas used to be their singer back in the early ninties. It's sort of similar to BZ, more indie good-time-surf sort of stuff. I'll try to update again soon when i find something out. In the meantime.... peace.
